A clear, up-to-date guide on the upcoming ETIAS and Entry/Exit System changes affecting Australians travelling to Europe from 2025–2026.
Understanding the Changes Coming for European Travel
If you or your clients are planning travel to Europe in the next few years, important updates are on the horizon. The European Union is preparing to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) along with the earlier Entry/Exit System (EES). CATO recently shared guidance following discussions with EU authorities, and here is a clear breakdown of what to expect.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is not a visa. Instead, it works as a pre-travel security screening for travellers who currently enter Europe visa-free, including Australians. When launched, ETIAS will allow approved travellers to visit participating European countries for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
The first stage of the system is expected in October 2025, with the full ETIAS launch currently anticipated in late 2026.
How ETIAS Will Work
Travellers will complete a simple online application before departure. Key points include:
-
The fee will be €7, except for applicants under 18 or over 70 who are exempt.
-
Approval is generally expected within minutes.
-
In rare cases, additional checks could extend processing to up to 30 days.
-
Authorisation is valid for three years, or until the passport expires — whichever comes first.
-
No fingerprints or health information are required at the application stage.
-
Applicants will provide basic personal details, travel plans, and answer several security questions.
Travellers will need to reapply if they renew their passport, as ETIAS authorisation is tied to the passport number.
Where ETIAS Applies
ETIAS will cover travel across 30 European countries, including all Schengen Zone nations as well as Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus. Airlines and travel providers will be required to verify that passengers have valid ETIAS approval before boarding. Without it, travellers risk being denied boarding.
Beware of Scams
The system is not live yet. Any website currently offering ETIAS applications or accepting payment is not legitimate.

What Happens in October 2025 – Introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES)
Before ETIAS officially begins, the European Union will launch the Entry/Exit System on 12 October 2025.
EES will:
-
Record entries and exits at external EU borders.
-
Capture fingerprints and a photo at border checkpoints.
-
Replace manual passport stamping with a centralised digital system.
-
Track stays to ensure compliance with the 90/180-day rule.
This is separate from ETIAS, but forms the foundation for its eventual rollout.
